How do you successfully curl your hair with a straightener?

My friend does it like every day and she tried to explain it to me but it didn’t make sense. I have kinda a small straightener but it works well for straightening. A link to a video or a description on how to do it is fine(: I appreciate any help, and thank you to all who answer!

How can I clean the plates of my ceramic straightener?

I have a Solia ceramic straightener that I have had for about three months. After only having it two weeks, it got speckled brown stuff on the sides of the plates. I have tried different things and even scratching it off and it just keeps getting worse. Any suggestions?

What is a good hair straightener aside from a chi?

I need an inexpensive hair straightener. One that will do the least damage to my thick curly hair. I have used a remington wet2straight before which i liked but i was wondering if there was something better? I do not wish to spend the money on something as pricey as a chi.
